Champions League Matchday 2 brought six-goal wins for Liverpool and Aston Villa, a dramatic late escape for Real Madrid and a surprise draw for Bayern Munich against Viking FK.
Tuesday night
Last season’s runners-up Arsenal secured their second win of the league stage with a 3-0 win over French side Lille at the Emirates Stadium. Goals from Jurrien Timber, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka ensured the Gunners maintained their 100% record. There was a huge round of applause for Olivier Giroud, who came on as a second-half substitute.
There was no such luck for the other English team playing on Tuesday night. Manchester United slipped to their third loss in all competitions with a 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium. Pablo Barrios opened the scoring in just 53 seconds, and Ademola Lookman scored the second on 79 minutes. Things went from bad to worse for United as Leny Yoro was shown a straight red for a tackle to deny a goalscoring opportunity.
Barcelona came back from being 1-0 down to win 4-1 over Galatasaray, with goals from João Cancelo, Fermín López, Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi. Aleksey Batrakov scored the Turkish side’s goal.
Viking FK held Bayern Munich to a 3-3 draw at the Lyse Arena. Goals from Gianni Stensness and Peter Christiansen put the Norwegian side 2-0 up inside 38 minutes. Two goals from Harry Kane, including a penalty, drew the sides level. Luis Díaz then put the six-time winners ahead, but Michael Olise was sent off for two bookable offences. Substitute Herman Haugen secured the draw for the hosts.

Wednesday night
Liverpool and Aston Villa both scored six goals on Wednesday. Liverpool beat Austrian side LASK 6-3 in the Raiffeisen Arena. Goals from Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong, Lewis Koumas, and a Bradley Barcola hat-trick secured the win, with goals from Robert Ljubicic and a Florian Flecker double for the hosts.
Aston Villa went one better, with a 6-0 home win against Turkish side Fenerbahçe. Goals from Johan Manzambi, Tammy Abraham and two goals each for Nicolas Jackson and Ross Barkley maintained Villa’s perfect start to the league phase.
However, Manchester City suffered a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of last year’s winners Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, Vitinha and Maghnes Akliouche scored for PSG, while Erling Haaland scored twice for the home team.
The biggest story of the night could well have been at the Stadio Olimpico, as AS Roma were 3-1 up over Real Madrid with under 10 minutes to go. Goals from Marten de Roon and two from Donyell Malen, after Kylian Mbappé had equalised, had the home side dreaming of a famous victory over the 15-time winners. Late goals from Carlos Espí, Endrick and Antonio Rüdiger turned the match around, securing a 4-3 win for José Mourinho’s side.
The best result of the night was at the Aspmyra Stadion as Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt secured a 1-0 win at home to Borussia Dortmund, with a goal from Fredrik Svøvold enough to secure the win.
Other results:
- Feyenoord 3-2 Como
- Real Betis 3-2 Porto
- Shakhtar Donetsk 3-1 AEK Athens
- Slovan Bratislava 0-3 Stuttgart
